Non-traditional students are offered a wide range of programs administered by professional and private organizations, advocacy groups, and corporations. Some of the popular grant programs that are available from the private sector for non-traditional students are as follows:
- The United Negro College Fund
For African-American students at every stage of their college career, the United Negro College Fund provides grants, fellowships, and scholarships. The eligibility criteria is that the student must be enrolled in a participating college or university.
The factors that grant awards are based on the course of study, college attendance, financial need, and academic achievement.
- The General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant
The United States Air Force supports the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant, which is designed to support service members and their families by providing financial aid for college. Up to $2000 is provided for service members and their spouses who are going back to college to finish their degree.
- The National Black Nurses Association
A number of grants and scholarships are provided by the National Black Nurses Association for adult African-American students who are planning to return to college and complete their nursing degrees. The grant may range from $500 to $2,000.
- The Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards
Financial support is provided to women and single mothers, who are the primary source of income for their families. There are three levels of grants that are available to women who are going to college to complete degrees by the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards. These grants help women to advance in their careers. The regional awards range from $3,000 to $5,000.
- Michigan State University administers the William E. and Phoebe B. Clark Scholarship for the Returning Adult Student
The applicant for this grant must be an adult student, returning or beginning college to pursue their bachelor’s or advanced degree. Students who are returning to school after the death of a spouse and single parents are given priority. Amount of the grant varies from person to person on the basis of various factors like academic achievement, the course of study, and financial need.
- The American Association of University Women’s Career Development Grant
This grant program offers awards to adult women who are returning to college to get a degree in business. More than 60 grants are offered to women annually. Grants are awarded on the basis of factors like financial need and academic achievement.
