Getting a bird as a pet can be a rewarding experience. Birds are an excellent company. But before you bring a new bird home, you need to be aware of a few key details. Every breed has distinct characteristics, demands, and behaviors. Therefore, you must choose the ideal pet bird for your family’s way of life. Here are eight bird species that many people consider to be excellent pet birds.

Budgerigar
Budgies (also known as parakeets) are popular pet birds worldwide, and with good reason. These birds may be quite loving and affectionate when properly tamed and cared for. Budgies, in addition to being tiny and low maintenance, respond well to teaching and may learn a variety of entertaining bird behaviors, including talking. Parakeets have a distinctive green belly, a black and yellow back, a yellow head, and a dark blue tail. Parakeets can nibble on your hand, whistle in tune, and learn simple directions with repetition.

Dove
Doves are amiable birds and like engaging with their keepers but are also satisfied to spend most of their time enjoying themselves. Cleaning up after them is easy because they are medium-sized birds.

To prevent vitamin D deficiency in these birds, ensure they are provided balanced food, have at least a few hours of out-of-cage activity, and have access to UV sunshine. Doves like to live in couples or flocks and prefer to nest at night, and would enjoy a fresh piece of fruit twice a week as a pleasant treat!

Doves have dull gray and brown plumage, a black collar around the nape of the neck, and black eyes and beaks. White, orange, and pied doves are among the other distinct dove varieties.

Cockatiel
The charming Cockatiel is another excellent alternative for those looking for a pleasant and loving pet bird. If they are raised in a friendly environment and are hand-fed as young birds, these Australian birds make excellent companions. They are incredibly intelligent. Many learn to whistle and replicate typical home noises such as doorbells, telephones, and microwaves. These birds like socializing outside their cage, so consider getting a perch for them to use even if you’re not actively playing with them.

Cockatiels are gray in color with a yellow face and crown, orange cheeks, and a long tail.

Cockatoo
A Cockatoo is an excellent choice if you want a big pet bird that is friendly and loving. These lovely birds form close bonds with their keepers and desire to spend as much time as possible with them.

If they don’t get enough attention, Cockatoos can grow melancholic and turn to feather plucking or other harmful activities. These birds have predominantly white plumage with pale yellow on the wings and tail, a big white crest, and a black beak.

Lovebird
Another species that puts the beauty of a big parrot into a tiny, low-maintenance package is the lovebird. Lone lovebirds can thrive with a few hours of interaction with their caregivers each day. Give them a large cage with plenty of toys. These birds enjoy bathing, so provide them with a bowl of water twice or thrice a week for some fun!

This tiny bird is best described as having a short tail and a stocky physique. It comes in various colors: green, blue, peach, yellow, and white.

Pionus Parrot
Pionus parrots are known for being faithful to their keepers yet being independent. They like playing with their caregivers but are also content to entertain themselves with toys. Ensure that these lively birds enjoy at least three hours of outside activity daily. These have a distinctive appearance with a blue head and neck, a green body, black patches above the ears, red on the underside of the tail, and a black beak with red sides.

Hahn’s Macaw
Only found in South America, Hahn’s Macaws are the tiniest Macaws. However, they pack a lot of personality into their little bodies. They are clever and active birds that tend to be kind when properly socialized and handled. These Macaws may grow melancholic if neglected and may also be boisterous; however, some learn to speak effectively. These species are highly vivid, with mostly green plumage, blue forehead, red margins on their wings, orange eyes, and white rings around the eyes.

Canary
The Canaries, being members of the finch family, are another fantastic option for bird lovers looking for a hands-off companion. There are several varieties of Canaries to pick from, each with its unique care requirements. These birds require balanced food, a cage they can fly around in, and some toys to be healthy.

Birds make excellent pets. They’re fun to watch and can be trained to do tricks, talk, sing, and more. With this list, deciding which one to choose is so much easier that you’ll be sure to get one as soon as possible.
